Use our optional Foundation Lessons to activate students’ prior knowledge and help struggling students make connections to upcoming lessons.

What are ChalkTalk’s foundation lessons?

ChalkTalk’s foundation lessons cover basic topics that students must have a baseline knowledge of in order to access the more complex material covered on the SAT and ACT. For math, these lessons review topics such as adding and subtracting decimals and how to read different types of graphs. For English, topics include parts of speech and how to determine the main idea of a passage. We recognize these subjects are well below grade level, which is why we have made them optional. Some classes and students, however, may benefit from the additional review.

Where can ChalkTalk’s foundation lessons be found?

Foundation lessons are the first unit of each subject, labeled as “Unit 0.” If you choose not to teach these lessons, go directly to Unit 1: Section Overview.

How to decide whether to teach ChalkTalk's foundation lessons?

ChalkTalk recognizes that as the educator, you know your students best. This is another reason we made foundation lessons optional. Use your best judgment to determine if your students could benefit from the extra review before diving into the more complex SAT/ACT content! These lessons are intentionally short and not designed to take up an entire class period, so teaching them won’t eat up all your class time. They can even be taught before the SAT or ACT-specific lesson of the day!
