Don't worry! When you break it down, it's much simpler than you think. This guide explains the difference between score types and shows you exactly how SAT, PSAT, and ACT scores are calculated.
In This Article:
Part 1: π The Big Question: What is a "Raw Score" vs. a "Scaled Score"?
This is the most important concept to understand!
Raw Score: This is simply the number of questions you answered correctly. If you get 48 questions right, your raw score is 48.
Scaled Score: This is the final score you see on your report (e.g., "1350" on the SAT or "28" on the ACT). This score is converted from your raw score using a process called "equating."
What is "Equating"? Equating is a process that adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between different test dates. It ensures that a "1350" earned in March represents the same level of skill as a "1350" earned in May. It is not a "curve" based on who took the test with you.
Part 2: π How are SAT & PSAT Scores Calculated?
The SAT and PSAT scoring process is very similar.
You get a Raw Score for the Math section (total questions correct) and a Raw Score for the Reading & Writing section (total questions correct).
Each of these two raw scores is then converted into a Scaled Score using that specific test's conversion chart.
Your two scaled scores are added together to get your Total Score.
PSAT Scoring Example:
Math: A student answers 22 questions correctly. Their raw score is 22.
Using the chart below, this converts to a Scaled Score of 450.
Reading & Writing (ELA): A student answers 12 questions in Module 1 and 14 in Module 2. Their total raw score is 26.
Using the chart below, this converts to a Scaled Score of 432.
Total Score: 450 (Math) + 432 (ELA) = 882

Part 3:π‘How ChalkTalk PSAT Diagnostic Scoring Works
The scoring system for our PSAT diagnostic has some slight deviations from the standard PSAT administered by the College Board.
For example, on our diagnostic:
All test-takers start the Math section with a fixed score of 120 points, regardless of the number of correct answers.
We directly convert raw scores into section scores using a specific score chart for both Math and ELAR (unlike the statistical conversion of the standard PSAT).
Our diagnostic simplifies the final ELAR scaled score: we add the section scores for Reading and Writing and then multiply the sum by 10. This yields a final scaled score ranging from 120 to 990.
Unscored Questions One important similarity is that each test sitting (Math Module 1, Math Module 2, etc.) includes two unscored questions. When reviewing test reports, teachers can see which two questions were not scored by going to: Tests > Practice Test > Reports
Part 4: π‘How ChalkTalk SAT Diagnostic Scoring Works
Our ChalkTalk SAT diagnostic also has a slightly different scoring system than the official College Board SAT.
All students start the Math section with 200 points, regardless of how many questions they answer correctly.
We directly convert raw scores to section scores using a specific SAT Score Chart for both the Math and ELAR sections (unlike the official statistical conversion).
Our final ELAR (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing) score is calculated more simply: we add the section scores for Reading and Writing and multiply the sum by 10. This gives a final scaled score ranging from 200 to 800.
Unscored Questions Just like the PSAT, each SAT diagnostic sitting includes two unscored questions. Teachers can see which questions were not scored in the test reports: Tests > Practice Test > Reports
Part 5: π How are ACT Scores Calculated?
The Enhanced ACT still uses Raw Scores and Scaled Scores. The relationship between them is essentially the same as before, but the "math" behind the conversion has changed because of the lower question counts.
How the Two Scores Work
Raw Score: This is simply the number of questions you answered correctly in a section. You get 1 point for every correct answer. There is no penalty for wrong answers.
Note: Your raw score is based only on "operational" questions. The Enhanced ACT includes "field test" (experimental) items that do not count toward your raw score.
Scaled Score: This is your final score on the 1β36 scale. ACT uses a process called equating to turn your raw score into a scaled score. This ensures that a score of 28 on a hard version of the test means the same thing as a score of 28 on an easier version.
A. The New Composite Formula
Your main score is now calculated by averaging your scores from English, Mathematics, and Reading.
Science is no longer part of the Composite: Even if you choose to take the Science section, those points will not be factored into your 1β36 Composite score.
Rounding: The average is rounded to the nearest whole number (e.g., a 25.66 will round to a 26, while a 25.33 will round to a 25).
B. Scoring for Optional Sections
While Science and Writing are now optional, they still receive scores:
Science Score (1β36): If you take it, you receive a standalone score. This is useful for students applying to STEM programs.
STEM Score (1β36): If you take Science, the ACT provides a STEM score, which is the average of your Math and Science scores.
Writing Score (2β12): This remains a separate score and does not affect your Composite or STEM scores.
C. Fewer Questions, More Weight
The total number of questions has been reduced from 215 to 171. While this gives you about 22% more time per question, it creates a "steeper" scoring curve:
Higher Stakes per Question: Because there are fewer "operational" questions (questions that actually count toward your score), missing just one or two questions can drop your scaled score more significantly than it did on the legacy version.
Field Test Items: Each section now contains integrated "field test" questions (unscored experimental items). You won't know which ones they are, so you must treat every question as if it counts.
D. Comparison Table: Question Counts
Section
| Legacy Questions | Enhanced Questions (Scored) | Field Test Items (Unscored) |
English | 75 | 40 | 10 |
Math | 60 | 41 | 4 |
Reading | 40 | 27 | 9 |
Science | 40 | 34 | 6 |
ACT Scoring Example:
Let's say a student gets the following Scaled Scores:
English: 31
Math: 24
Reading: 22
To find the Composite Score, you average them: (31 + 24 + 22) / 3 = 25.6
The ACT always rounds to the nearest whole number (so .5 rounds up). The composite score would be 26.
Important Note on Science
If you also took the Science section, that score will appear as a separate 1β36 score on your report and will be averaged with your Math score to create a STEM score, but it will not change this 26 Composite score.

Part 4: π Where to Find Your Scores on ChalkTalk
Ready to see your own scores? It's simple!
Log in to your ChalkTalk account.
Select the "Tests" tab π‘οΈ from the left-hand menu.
Select the test you want to review (e.g., Placement, Mid, or Exit Test).
You will see two tables with your scores:
The first table shows your Raw Score for each subject and sitting.
The second table (below the first) shows your final Scaled Score for each subject, as well as the total scaled score.
For the SAT: The total score for each subject is out of 800, and the scaled score is out of 1600.
For the ACT: The total score for each subject is out of 36, and the scale score is also out of 36.
Understanding raw scores can help you determine how many additional pointsβor how many more questionsβyou need to answer correctly to reach your target score.
